How does a brushless motor work?


The brushless DC motor consists of a motor body and a driver, and is a typical mechatronic product. Because the brushless DC motor operates in a self-controlled manner, it will not add a starting winding to the rotor like a synchronous motor with heavy-load starting under variable frequency speed regulation, nor will it cause oscillation and loss of step when the load changes suddenly. The permanent magnets of small and medium-capacity brushless DC motors are now mostly made of rare-earth neodymium-iron-boron (Nd-Fe-B) materials with high magnetic energy levels. Therefore, the volume of the rare earth permanent magnet brushless motor is reduced by one frame size compared with the three-phase asynchronous motor of the same capacity.

Background information:

The stator winding of the motor is mostly made into a three-phase symmetrical star connection, which is very similar to the three-phase asynchronous motor. A magnetized permanent magnet is attached to the rotor of the motor. In order to detect the polarity of the rotor of the motor, a position sensor is installed in the motor. The driver is composed of power electronic devices and integrated circuits. Its functions are: accept the start, stop and braking signals of the motor to control the start, stop and braking of the motor; accept the position sensor signal and the forward and reverse signals to control the reverse. Change the on-off of each power tube of the bridge to generate continuous torque; accept speed commands and speed feedback signals to control and adjust the speed; provide protection and display, etc.

In the past 30 years, the research on variable frequency speed regulation of asynchronous motors is ultimately to find a way to control the torque of asynchronous motors. Rare-earth permanent magnet brushless DC motors are bound to have wide speed regulation, small size, high efficiency and steady speed. Features such as small error show advantages in the field of speed regulation.

Because the brushless DC motor has the characteristics of the DC brush motor and is also a frequency changing device, it is also known as DC frequency conversion, and the international common term is BLDC. The operating efficiency, low-speed torque, and rotational speed accuracy of the brushless DC motor are better than those of the inverter of any control technology, so it deserves the attention of the industry.
